DISCIPLINE FOUR · OUTWARD FACING
The Trusted Advisor
Earn the decisions that matter.
The Trusted Advisor is the fourth discipline in The Presales BOAT System™. It earns the executive trust that turns good work into a decision.
What does this customer need to believe to decide with confidence?
The moment that has nothing to do with technology
Somewhere between the technical win and the signed contract, there’s a moment that has nothing to do with technology. An executive decides whether they trust you enough to bet their credibility on your recommendation.
A better demo won’t earn that moment. Trust gets earned the way it always has: through preparation, consistency, curiosity, and a track record of telling the truth when a more convenient answer was available.
The other three disciplines ultimately serve this one. Builders, Operators, and Architects can all do excellent work that never gets adopted if the executive in the room doesn’t trust the person delivering it. Customers buy the safest decision, the one that’s easiest to defend inside their own organization, and the Trusted Advisor’s job is to help them reach it with confidence. Like the Architect, the Trusted Advisor faces outward, toward the customer.
STORY FROM THE FIELD
The Migration She Didn’t Recommend
A Principal SC was leading a strategic assessment for a collections agency that wanted an independent evaluation of its predictive dialer and contact center environment. Outbound connect rates were underperforming, and that was hitting collections revenue directly.
The complication was commercial. The customer had bought the platform from one of her firm’s strategic software partners, and that partner wanted to position a migration to its new cloud platform. The customer wasn’t convinced replacement was the right call. They wanted to know whether they could get more from what they already had.
That put her between two parties who defined success differently, with a migration services estimate already sitting in her own Account Executive’s forecast. Four days of workshops and agent shadowing would decide which way the evidence pointed.
What the evidence showed, who she told first, and what it did to her company’s forecast is the story at the heart of Chapter 22.
